Viking Sky Delayed Until 2017May 12, 2015 By: Newswire
Viking Cruises has announced that Viking Sky, sister ship to the recently-launched Viking Star, will be delivered in spring 2017 instead of June 2016 as originally planned.
The delay was due in part to delays in construction of Holland America Line's new Koningsdam, which like Viking Sky is being built at the Marghera shipyard. Viking Sky's construction will now be moved to Fincantieri’s Ancona shipyard, where it will be built alongside the Viking Sea.
The delay will result in changes to five Viking Sea and five Viking Sky cruises that had been set to depart between June and September 2016. Viking said it will offer passengers who had booked on those sailings the option to transfer to Viking Sea, which is still due to be delivered in 2016.
Viking Sea and Viking Sky are the second and third of Viking's new oceangoing cruise ships, the first of which, Viking Star, launched recently. Travel Agent is sailing on Viking Star now -- here is a photo tour of the exterior and our stateroom.
The new ships are engineered at a small scale to allow direct access to most ports. Equipped with modern Scandinavian décor, Viking Star was designed by the same interior design team responsible for Viking's Longships. Design elements are meant to pay homage to Nordic heritage. Additionally, a glass-backed infinity pool cantilevered off the stern offers unobstructed views, indoor-outdoor spaces offer options for al fresco dining, windows and skylights let in natural light, and a wrap-around promenade deck is included as a nod to classic ocean liners. The ships also have a collection of Scandanavian artwork, and will sail itineraries designed to incorporate late evenings or overnights in port.
