It’s been another busy week for news regarding new cruise ships.
This week Royal Caribbean celebrated the naming ceremony for its newest ship, the largest cruise ship in the world: Symphony of the Seas. During the ship’s homecoming to Miami, where it will homeport in the new Terminal A, Royal Caribbean celebrated a naming ceremony for the new ship with the cruise line’s first “Godfamily,” actors Alexa and Carlos PenaVega, along with their 23-month-old son, Ocean.
Also this week Carnival Cruise Line cut steel on the first of its new “XL” class of vessel, as well as showed off the livery for the new ship. Set to debut in 2020, the new, liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered ship will have 5,200 berths. A second XL class ship is slated for delivery in 2022, just in time for the line’s 50th anniversary.
Finally, in expedition cruise news, this week Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours announced another delay for the launch of the company’s first Discovery Yacht, the Scenic Eclipse. Citing construction issues at the Uljanik shipyard in Croatia, where the new ship is being built, as well as a strike by specialist engine and systems commissioning workers, Scenic said that the new ship will now launch April 13, 2019. Scenic said it is offering affected guests a full refund, consideration of any reasonable travel costs incurred due to the change and a 25 percent future cruise credit. The second Discovery Yacht for the line, the Scenic Eclipse II, is still expected to debut in or around 2020.
