American Airlines To Cease Oakland Operation

With jet-fuel prices rising 40 percent this year and a weakening economy, one airline after another has instituted cost-cutting measures; American Airlines is the latest carrier to announce cuts based on the high price of fuel. Beginning September 3, American will cease all service to California's Oakland International Airport, ending a six-decade run at the airport.

Throughout the busy summer travel season, American will continue to fly three daily round-trip flights between Oakland and its Dallas/Fort Worth hub. These flights represent 1.5 percent of passenger activity at the Oakland airport. American has announced that the company will try to accommodate customers holding Oakland tickets for travel after September 3 by re-booking them on flights from San Francisco and San Jose airports.
