Brussels Shutters Airport Due to Strike

April 12, 2007 By: Jennifer Merritt Travel Agent

Brussels International Airport closed on Friday after security personnel and firefighters went on strike. The airport is to remain closed indefinitely for safety reasons, because no firefighters were available to stand by on the airport's tarmac, authorities told The AP. Meanwhile, European flights to the airport were redirected to other Belgian airports, with intercontinental flights sent to Amsterdam, Frankfurt or Paris. The unions staged the strike in protest over alleged poor treatment from management, forcing the airport to cancel all incoming and departing flights, The AP said, noting that the airport expected to handle 25,000 passengers returning from Easter vacations on Friday.
