Northwest Cutting Summer Schedule

After a week in which it canceled nearly 1,000 flights, Northwest Airlines said it would reduce its domestic schedule for the rest of the summer by about three percent, The New York Times reports. Northwest said the cancellations and delays were caused by "weather and related air traffic control restrictions" that resulted in "crew shortages," and that high pilot absenteeism also contributed to the problem. The Northwest unit of the Air Line Pilots Association told the paper that Northwest still had 400 pilots on furlough and that its work force was not adequate to handle demand.
