Lufthansa Strike Update: 900 Flights Canceled Worldwide

April 2, 2014

As threatened, Lufthansa began its three-day pilots strike today, causing the cancelation of about 900 flights worldwide. The airline's website has updates on the situation and a list of canceled flights that is continually updated.

The airline, Europe's second-largest, said that it had sent more than 200,000 text messages and emails to passengers with reservations for flights during the strike period, warning them of the cancelations. Thousands of customers had also consulted a list of affected flights posted on the airline’s website.

But the New York Times reported that some travelers have struggled to find alternative flights, and the city of Frankfurt, a major Lufthansa hub, was bracing for possible trouble in the coming days, as thousands of attendees of an industrial trade show were left unsure about leaving the city on Thursday and Friday. (Cots and amenities have been prepared for stranded passengers.) The airport's website is being updated with information on the strike and how passengers can stay up to date on the status of their flights:

Representatives said that the airports at Frankfurt and Munich, another Lufthansa hub, were "relatively calm."

The cancelations are expected to affect more than 425,000 travelers through Friday. Lufthansa is reportedly planning to cancel another 1,200 flights scheduled for Thursday.
