Greek Hotel Chain Celebrates 10 Years of Going Green

March 12, 2010 By: Jena Tesse Fox

The eight Aldemar Hotels on Crete, Rhodos and West Peloponese are strengthening their environmental strategy. The hotels' corporate social responsibility program ‘Mare Verde’ has been part of total quality management for ten years, and includes investments in new solar panels, water cleaning, recycling systems and organic food.

About 85 percent of the hot water needed in the hotels is made by solar energy. Energy consumption could be reduced by 40 percent. Fresh water consumption has been reduced by 35 percent via reprocessing. Nearly 25 percent of needed fruits and vegetables are from own organic farming. Tasty bonus: In all hotels, a breakfast buffet with organic and healthy food has been become standard, including fat-reduced yogurts and cheese, smoothies, fresh juices, dried fruits and sugar-free jam are available. The hotels also plan to launch sushi corners in all hotel restaurants, starting with a fine-dining sushi restaurant at the Aldemar Royal Mare on Crete.
