Canada: The Merry Maritimes

May 1, 2006 By: Edward Fians Home-Based Travel Agent

Atlantic Canada is still relatively unknown, but well worth selling

"I know plenty about the Rockies and Western Canada, but not Atlantic Canada. I hear it's really great, though. I've always wanted to go." Agents speak glowingly of Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, but most admit they haven't experienced one of the oldest, most cost-effective and distinctive English-speaking destinations on the globe. The new Canadian tourism brand launching this year will have the slogan "Keep Exploring" to inspire the curious traveler. Kingsbrae Arms in St. Andrews, NB, is a luxurious slice of the seaside.

Canadian Sailing Expeditions out of Nova Scotia provides tall-ship cruising for luxury and small-group clientele. Six-night cruises on the 188-foot Concordia will stop in Quebec, Nova Scotia, PEI, Newfoundland and Labrador. Rates—starting at $1,707 per person double—include meals, drinks, sailing training, onboard lectures and entertainment, and use of bikes, kayaks and the library.

Both Holland America and Seabourn operate cruises to the Maritimes. HAL's seven-night "Eastern Canada and New England" cruise between Boston and Quebec City includes Bar Harbor, ME; Halifax and Sydney, NS; and Charlottetown, PEI. Rates start at $716. Seabourn's eight-night "Eastern Seaboard" cruise leaves from Gloucester, stopping at Portland, ME; Baddeck, NS; Charlottetown, PEI; Port Saguenay and Quebec City, QC. Rates start at $5,299.

Relais & Chateaux's 10-room Kingsbrae Arms in St. Andrews, NB, is a luxurious slice of the seaside halfway between Saint John, NB, and Bangor, ME. Call Harry Chancey, owner and general manager at 506-529-1897 to book. Rates start at $600 for a room and $750 for a suite.

Horizon & Co.'s "Earth to Human" leaves from Deer Lake, NL, July 16. The roundtrip rate of $2,400 includes accommodations, seven breakfasts and dinners, two lunches, entrance fees and tours, transfers and baggage handling, guides, tips for porters, drivers, restaurants and other service staff, and pre-departure materials, including document wallets and destination details. Resources

For about $1,453 per person double, Coastal Safari covers all transportation, accommodations, meals, and camp and kayaking gear for the seven-night trip. Clients only need to bring personal gear.

Grey River Lodge in Newfound-land specializes in big-game hunting, operating four luxurious "modern" lodges with multiple bedrooms that are only accessible by helicopter. Full-time cooks are on staff, as well. Contact the lodge for rates and more detailed information.
