Malaria Outbreak in Jamaica

December 6, 2006 By: Mark Rogers Travel Agent

The Jamaican Ministry of Health is undertaking intensive measures to control and contain an outbreak of malaria in Jamaica. Currently, eleven cases of malaria have been confirmed in three neighborhoods within the capital city of Kingston and two cases have been reported in Sydenham, in the adjacent province of St. Catherines. One case has been reported in a U.S. traveler returning from Jamaica. Although malaria is not endemic to Jamaica, the island's tropical climate makes it susceptible to isolated outbreaks. Health Alert cards are being provided to arriving and departing air passengers advising travelers of the malaria outbreak.
