In April, tour operator Journey Mexico is set offer adventurous travelers a 10-day hiking trip into the remote mountains of the Copper Canyon to visit the local Tarahumara villages and experience the local celebration of the Holy Week. This is the seventh year Journey Mexico has offered this excursion.
In Mexico, the most important holiday in the church calendar is Semana Santa, or the Holy Week, which is the week leading up to Easter Sunday. It is from April 17-24.
The Raramuri (as the Tarahumara indigenous people refer to themselves) observe a unique variation of traditional Semana Santa rituals, combining ancient creation myths with Catholic tradition, resulting in processions, dances, and rituals.
The rugged hike culminates in the town of Munerachi on the walls of the Batopilas Canyon, where travelers participate in the most intense night of celebration in one of the most traditional Tarahumara villages.
Getting up into the Sierra Tarahumara mountains to begin the hike is a highlight itself. Travelers enjoy the world famous Chihuahua al Pacifico train as it travels through dozens of tunnels and over countless bridges with exceptional opportunities for taking pictures or just enjoying the incredible views.
Other highlights of the trip include visiting Spanish Missions, locals ranches, a local crafts cooperative, and a hike to the spiritually charged "Lost Cathedral" of Satevo. The maximum group size for this trip is 12 people, and the price per person is $2,490.
