September 11, 2011 By: Meagan Drillinger

Puerto Vallarta is gearing up for the Pan American Games in 2011, according to news Travel Agent received at ASTA's Travel Retailing & Destination Expo. In preparation for the regional event, the country is expecting to debut brand-new Now and Secrets resorts in February 2012.

The destination has also rebuilt the Malecon Puerto Vallarta, which will open in late September as a much more pedestrian-friendlier destination with a full boardwalk walking area.

Travel Agent has already reported that Tianguis 2012 will be hosted in Puerto Vallarta, the first time the event has been held anywhere other than Acapulco. The event will run from March 25 through 28, 2012.

Beginning in December, Virgin America will be offering direct flights from San Francisco to Puerto Vallarta, as well.
