Resort Spas in Mexico

September 26, 2012 By: Joe Pike Travel Agent

Las Ventanas
Las Ventanas provides a nurturing, indoor-outdoor spa experience in a verdant and tranquil setting.

A trip to Mexico itself may be considered therapeutic to some, but many resorts throughout the country have the added allure of world-class spas. From the tip of the Baja peninsula to the shores of the Riviera Maya, Travel Agent takes a look at some of the recent developments on the wellness front.

Los Cabos’ Las Ventanas Unveils ‘Desert Oasis’ Spa

We recently spoke with Martein van Wagenberg, general manager of Las Ventanas al Paraiso, A Rosewood Resort in Los Cabos, and learned of some major upgrades clients can expect the next time they grace this luxury resort in Mexico.

Earlier this year, Las Ventanas unveiled a dramatic new “desert oasis” spa, taking its original award-winning facility to new heights in a major transformation that creates a nurturing, indoor-outdoor experience in a verdant and tranquil setting. The concept of the spa as a desert oasis was accomplished by creating a dense, green canopy with 45 areca and date palms with spreading fronds. Thatched palapas, latilla screens and walls of vegetation further enhance the sense of protection and intimacy.

Stone pathways lead to eight treatment cabanas, including two that are the spa’s first couples’ facilities. Each cabana has an outdoor shower and a private terrace of small paving stones interlaced with grass—enabling guests to enjoy both indoor and outdoor treatments. The two new couples’ cabanas also have a round outdoor bathtub for two, so couples can have an extended experience combining several treatments, bathing and relaxation.

“It was a project we’d thought about for a few years and finally last year we just thought, ‘Lets go for it,’ ” said Wagenberg, who noted that the spa upgrades totaled roughly $2 million. “The response has been amazing.”

The suite’s amenities include a hydromassage bathtub with chromotherapy, hair and makeup chair, wedding gown closet and a multifunctional massage table. Brides can choose from four luxurious spa treatments known as “wedding rituals,” designed to alleviate pre-wedding stress.

Among the available wedding spa rituals is the “Bride’s Dream,” a 240-minute spa treatment that includes a full-body exfoliation with organic honey, a soothing flower petal bath, a lemongrass body wrap and an aromatherapy facial followed by a manicure and pedicure. Nervous mothers and bridesmaids can also indulge in relaxation with the soothing “Wedding Bells” spa treatment, which includes therapeutic massage and a holistic facial. Other rituals are the 180-minute “Gorgeous Bride,” a calming spa experience featuring the Gotu Kola firming body treatment, and the “Tranquility Bride Experience,” a full-body exfoliation treatment followed by a pearl facial. Wedding spa rituals range from $588 to $759.

The lavish bridal suite is available for a fee of $80 per hour, including refreshments and snacks for the bride and her wedding party. Hair styling and makeup services can be provided in the suite, with packages starting at $118.

Paradisus’ Spa Experience in Playa Del Carmen

When Melia Hotels International expanded its Paradisus resort brand with two new properties in Riviera Maya in December, wellness was a core ingredient of their “LUXE-clusive” experience. Paradisus Playa del Carmen La Esmeralda and Paradisus Playa del Carmen La Perla share a common area called El Zocalo, which includes a YHI Spa and Health Club, with a full-service beauty salon and various exercise programs.

The full-service health clubs include 14 treatments rooms, the latest equipment, the guidance of personal trainers, and unique workouts such as couples’ training, group classes and personalized one-on-one wellness programs designed to meet your clients’ mind-body goals.

Some YHI Spa amenities include Zen-like spa sanctuaries with indoor and outdoor treatment rooms; whirlpools, saunas and steam rooms (complimentary to all clients); aromatherapy; signature treatments; radiance scrubs; and hydrotherapy aromatic baths.

El Zocalo also contains the “Palapa” activities center, a theater, a ballroom, meeting and convention space with 14 meeting rooms, Wi-Fi facilities, and access to 10 restaurants. Guests can also participate in such activities as golfing, bike tours and wine tastings.

More on Mexico’s Spa Scene

Among other recent spa-related developments in Mexico, the new 221-room JW Marriott Hotel Mexico City Santa Fe, which opened this summer, is home to the Oriental Wellness Spa, which has five treatment rooms, saunas, vapor rooms, Jacuzzis and a meditation area.

An onsite spa, well-equipped fitness center and jogging path are among the many all-inclusive features of the new five-star Hilton Puerto Vallarta, scheduled to open November 2. The five-star property is well situated in the hotel zone five minutes south of Gustavo Diaz Ordaz International Airport (PVR) and 10 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta’s city center. The hotel complies with ADA guidelines and has an accessible route from the public entrance to the spa.

The Iberostar Cancun, which had its grand opening in February, touts the exclusive signature treatments of the Initium Spa among its wealth of amenities. The spa has eight private treatment rooms, whirlpool, a dedicated beach area for massages, beauty salon, relaxation lounges and secluded Relaxation Garden.
