Grand Hyatt New York Is Fine After Midtown Explosion

July 20, 2007 By: David Eisen Travel Agent

The pipe explosion that rocked the Grand Central area of Manhattan and left a gaping hole on 41st Street Wednesday shook buildings and, moreover, people with fear, but on Thursday people and businesses tried to get things back to normal. The Grand Hyatt New York, noticeable for its glass exterior, is only a few blocks from the eruption, but suffered no structural damage says Lori Armon, Hyatt's director of corporate public relations. "At no point were guests inside of the hotel at any risk," she says. Access to the hotel has been affected, as guests are currently entering and exiting the building through the north side of Grand Central Terminal. Both cars and cabs are able to drop off and pick guests up at the Park Avenue entrance. In light of the incident, Armon says that the hotel has closed all outside air intake and only re-circulated the air inside of the hotel as prescribed by the City of New York. Air quality tests were performed on the inside of the hotel and levels remain normal.
