Hawaii to Allow Fishing Off Waikiki Coast

December 14, 2011 By: Jena Tesse Fox

If your clients have always dreamed of combining their passion for fishing with a trip to Oahu, they're in luck: The Honolulu Star-Advertiser is reporting that Hawaii will allow fishing in a protected area off Waikiki after closing it for a year to allow fish stocks to replenish. The fishing area runs from the Waikiki War Memorial Natatorium to the Diamond Head Lighthouse and about 500 yards out to sea, and will reopen as of January 1.
The Department of Land and Natural Resources says fishermen may use fishing poles, thrownets and their hands to catch fish in the area. Spear fishing will be allowed only during daylight hours.
The Waikiki-Diamond Head Shoreline Fisheries Management Area has been closed to fishing every other year since the late 1980s. Fishing still isn't allowed in the Waikiki Marine Life Conservation District, which is between the Natatorium and the Kapahulu seawall.
