Super Typhoon Megi Strikes the Philippines

The Philippines was struck Monday, October 18, with the strongest cyclone it has seen in years, killing at least three people, reports the Associated Press. In its wake, Super Typhoon Megi left scattered trees and power poles, which have caused thousands to flee for safety.

According to the AP, the typhoon is expected to hit China and Vietnam. Winds were reported at 140 miles per hour as the typhoon swept across Palanan Bay in Isabela province. Over 4,150 Filipinos on their way out of Isabela province were left stranded due to collapsed trees and debris.

Maj. Gen. Benito Ramos
, who heads the country's disaster-preparedness agency told the AP that thousands of military reserve officers and volunteers were on standby.
