Second "Chunnel" May Connect Europe, Africa

February 8, 2007 By: Jennifer Merritt Travel Agent

Spain and Morocco are making moves to build a railroad under the Strait of Gibraltar that would emulate the Channel Tunnel between Britain and France. The Washington Journal reports that the project would be comprised of parallel tunnels with a service tunnel in between. Last fall, the government of Morocco hired a Swiss engineering firm to draw up blueprints, the paper said, but also noted that the project has numerous hurdles, including deeper water and a seabed that would force the tunnel to be pushed down another 300 feet, which would cause the tunnel to leak—no matter how well constructed—due to water pressure. Spanish and Moroccan officials told the paper they are committed to building the tunnels but said the cost and engineering problems would be hard to overcome.
