Stats: Orlando, Cancun Top Spring Break Destinations in Allianz Study

Orlando and Cancun are the top domestic and international destinations for spring break travel this year, according to a new study by Allianz Global Assistance.

Allianz Global Assistance reviewed more than four million trips planned by its customers during the spring break season – February 24, 2017, through April 9, 2017, – for travel between five and eight days in length.

Domestically, the results showed that travelers are planning trips to Orlando (8.62 percent) followed in popularity by Las Vegas (5.29 percent), Phoenix (4.38 percent), Fort Lauderdale (4.13 percent), Los Angeles (4 percent), Fort Myers (3.94 percent), Denver (3.69 percent), Salt Lake City (3.35 percent), San Francisco (3.14 percent) and Tampa (3.04 percent).

Internationally, travelers are planning trips to Cancun, Mexico (16.73 percent), followed in popularity by Cabo San Lucas, Mexico (5.27 percent); San Juan, Puerto Rico (4.84 percent); Punta Cana, Dominican Republic (4.74 percent); Puerto Vallarta, Mexico (4.41 percent); London, United Kingdom (3.95 percent); Montego Bay, Jamaica (3.16 percent); Aruba Island, Aruba (2.97 percent); Nassau, Bahamas (2.85 percent); and St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands (2.81 percent).

The findings also showed the most popular flight days for spring break travel in 2017. The busiest travel day with the most travelers (10 percent) for domestic and international trips is March 11, 2017.

“The review showed a good mix of beach, skiing and well-known destinations attracting Americans for spring break this year,” said Daniel Durazo, director of communications for Allianz Global Assistance USA. “Our statistics showed that most people are traveling mid to late in the week. To avoid long lines at the airport and other inconveniences, we recommend booking travel for a Monday or Tuesday.”
