Wildfires in Russia Continue, Air Traffic Blocked

August 6, 2010 By: Jena Tesse Fox

Sad news from the New York Times: Russia is still trying to gain control of at least 600 wildfires across the country that have reportedly killed at least 50 people and blocked air travel due to air conditions.

The Itar-Tass news agency reported that dozens of flights were reportedly delayed at Moscow's Domodedovo Airport as visibility on the runways fell to about 410 yards.

The country is suffering from their most intense heat wave on record (temperatures today are expected to be over 100 degrees Fahrenheit), in addition to a severe drought, making conditions ideal for fires. The worst fires, we hear, are in the western and central parts of Russia, and more than 3,000 people have lost their homes.
