Hotel Inventory in St. Martin to Increase in Four Years

May 26, 2010 By: Joe Pike

PHILIPSBURG, St. Maarten – During our week-long coverage of the ninth annual SMART tradeshow in St. Maarten, Travel Agent sat down with members of the St. Martin Office of Tourism and learned that the French region of the country is expected to see a 10-15-percent spike in hotel rooms in the next three to four years.

Currently the French side had roughly 1,900 hotels rooms, but that number is expected to grow as more hotels open up— namely the La Belle Creole resort, a five-star property that has been closed since 1996 and is expected to re-open in the next two years, adding a little more than 100 rooms to the total inventory of the island. The Happy Bay hotel is also expected to re-open in the next few years, also with roughly 100 rooms.

Both hotels were closed down due to financial woes, we were told.
