Green Efforts to Unite Korea?

March 26, 2010 By: Meagan Drillinger

The uninhabited strip of land separating North Korea and South Korea, the Korean Demilitarized Zone, has divided the peninsula for 57 years and may be the route to bringing the two together.

In this "no man's land," a unique ecosystem has developed and the two Koreas have agreed to put their conflict aside and work together to preserve the natural habitat created in the 155-mile stretch. Some of Korea's most endangered species inhabit the DMZ, including Korean tiger, Asiatic black bear and the red-crowned and white-naped cranes.

The project, which is also geared to help promote tourism, will include bicycle routes and an observation center. More details will be announced in September.
