Amarillo Airport Reopens Following Renovations

July 13, 2011 By: Adam Leposa

On July 12, Rick Husband Amarillo Airport in Amarillo, Texas reopened following a $52.2 million renovation.

The renovations included a new 46,000 square foot passenger concourse with seven boarding gates, a new secure baggage handling system, a larger security checkpoint area and remodeled airline ticket counters,
baggage area and lobby.

These renovations began in 2008 to serve the more than 800,000 passengers that pass through the airport each year. A separate project began in February to rehabilitate the 40 year old roadway and bridge that provides vehicle access to the ticketing lobby on the second floor, as well as to add a new free parking lot.

Located in the Texas panhandle about 350 miles north of the Dallas and Fort Worth area, Amarillo offers numerous attractions for outdoor enthusiasts, arts connoisseurs and history buffs. Palo Duro Canyon is the second-largest canyon in the U.S., the Panhandle Plains Historical Museum is the largest history museum in Texas and the Wonderland Amusement Park is open year-round. Historic Route 66, the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum and the Kwahadi Museum of the American Indian celebrate American history and heritage, and the city is home to professional ballet, opera, symphony and theater companies.
