Thailand Pours National Cocktail to Capture Thirsty Tourists

February 20, 2009 By: Mark Rogers

Thailand’s tourism has had a tough year from political upheaval, airport shutdowns and the worldwide economic downturn. Instead of crying in its beer, Thailand has decided to create a national cocktail. In a world of Cuba Libres, Red Stripe beer, Singapore Slings and Tequila Sunrises – why can’t there be room for a Thai national libation? Thailand’s Tourism Authority (TAT) has named the cocktail the “Siam Sunray” and describe it as "Thailand in a glass: the new punch in Thai tourism." The drink contains a shot of vodka, coconut liqueur, a dash of chili pepper and sugar, lime juice and a hint of lemongrass and ginger. The mixture is then shaken and strained into a glass with ice and soda water.

"Thailand's new signature drink is based on very Thai ingredients," says a spokesperson for TAT. "Successful signature drinks are one way to fast-track holiday destinations on to the world tourism map."
