Hawaii Hotels End June on High Note

July 7, 2006 By: Camie Foster Travel Agent

Hotels throughout Hawaii posted higher average room rates for the last week of June compared with the same week a year earlier, according to the latest weekly Hawaii Hotel Industry Snapshot issued by Hospitality Advisors. Occupancy statewide was 85.5 percent for the week, up six-tenths of a percent, but average room rate climbed by more than 10 percent to $194.77. Oahu outpaced the statewide occupancy average by logging average occupancy of 89 percent for the week, while Maui posted the state's highest room rate, an average $268.51, up 12.8 percent from the same time last year. Posting the highest rate of increase in room rate, however, were hotels on the Big Island, where average rates climbed 15.6 percent to $183.99. By comparison, the national average saw a greater rate of increase—3.1 percent—in occupancy to 72.3 percent, but actual occupancy, average room rate, and increase in room rate from the same week last year all lagged. National room rate was $96.42, up 7.2 percent from the same week last year.
