Hawaii Hotels Start August on a Mixed Note

August 11, 2006 By: Camie Foster Travel Agent

Hotels throughout Hawaii posted mixed results for the week ending Aug. 5, compared with the same week a year earlier, according to the latest Hawaii Hotel Industry Snapshot issued by Honolulu-based Hospitality Advisors. Room rates were up 12.2 percent statewide to an average of $209.77, with rates on the Big Island climbing by 17.9 percent and those on Maui up by 14.8 percent. However, occupancy statewide dipped by 5.6 percent to 85.3 percent. This rate was above the national average of 73 percent, which itself dropped by eight-tenths of a percent. Holding the line on occupancy in Hawaii was Maui, whose rate decreased by 0.6 percent to 86.5 percent. Oahu posted occupancy of 88 percent, outpacing the state average, even though that figure represented a 7 percent dip from the same week a year earlier.
