The Virginia Tourism Corporation has launched a site for any history buff planning to travel during the 150th commemoration of the American Civil War. Virginia will showcase rich and diverse stories from ordinary people who did extraordinary things during the conflict. Tourism trip ideas include a Wine and History trail, which may include kayaking, hiking, biking and visiting and shopping at wineries. Every segue way includes a significant historical setting, such as the Rappahannock River, where over 10,000 slaves gained freedom led by John Washington. Family-friendly events are open to young travelers, providing interactive experiences along with entertainment.
The Civil War Adventure Camp allows children use their imagination in reliving the life of a Civil War soldier. They sleep in recreated soldier huts and barracks and eat a soldier's supper and breakfast, all while learning drills tactics, camp skills and music. The Stratford Hall Plantation, birthplace of General Robert E. Lee, will host a scavenger hunt for families with prizes and ultimate family fun. Virginia's commemoration also features battle reenactments. This event gives visitors the opportunity to not only witness reenactments but also sit in lectures and guided walks of the battlefields. Surely a can't-miss opportunity for any history buff.
