A Tropical Storm Warning and Hurricane Watch have been issued for Bermuda as Hurricane Humberto approaches, according to the Bermuda Weather Service. The storm is currently 555 miles west of the island.
A Tropical Storm Warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected within the warning area, generally within 36 hours, although the National Hurricane Center (NHC) says it could happen within 24 hours. The NHC forecasts the storm’s center to reach Bermuda Wednesday night through Thursday morning. Humberto has maximum sustained winds of 100 mph and additional strengthening is expected, potentially into a Category 3 hurricane.
The NHC says Humberto may bring periods of heavy rain to Bermuda beginning Tuesday, with rainfall accumulations of one to three inches expected. Large swells generated by Humberto will increase along the coast of Bermuda by Wednesday.
Elsewhere, swells will affect the northwestern Bahamas, which was recently battered by Hurricane Dorian, and the southeastern coast of the United States from east-central Florida to North Carolina during the next couple of days. These swells could cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
Further southeast, but heading towards the Caribbean, is a small, low-pressure system. It’s currently 1,000 miles east of the Lesser Antilles but its shower and thunderstorm activity has increased as of this morning, the NHC says. It adds that conditions are expected to be conducive for the formation of a tropical depression during the next day or so as the storm moves northwestward to west-northwestward.
The storm’s formation chance through 48 hours is labeled as “high,” with a 90 percent chance.
