The Caribbean island of Nevis has announced that its annual festival, “Culturama,” will be held from July 21 through August 7, 2022.
The brainchild of the Nevis Dramatic and Cultural Society (NEDACS), “Culturama” began in 1974 with the primary goal of creating an environment in which Nevisian heritage and indigenous customs would be celebrated. The timing of this annual event is especially significant as it coincides with the observance of the 1838 emancipation of African slaves throughout the British Empire in the Caribbean. This is a major milestone in the island’s history as Nevisians are primarily of African descent.
“We believe it is important to stay true to our cultural roots,” said Devon Liburd, CEO of the Nevis Tourism Authority. “Locals and visitors alike love experiencing ‘Culturama’, as this lively event brings together in a single showcase all the colorful traditions that make Nevis so unique.”
Nevis Tourism Authority will sponsor Dwayne Smith, one of the 2022 “Mr. Kool” participants. The “Mr. Kool” contest provides the best opportunity for young men of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis to showcase their modeling skills, become an Ambassador for Nevis, achieve personal goals and gain exposure.
The festival schedule includes sporting events, concerts, poetry readings, theatrical performances, pageants, parades and “limes”, or parties, featuring local cuisine and cocktails. All events are free to attend.
