MSC Group Breaks Ground on PortMiami Cruise Terminal

MSC Group’s Cruise Division broke ground on its new terminal at PortMiami, touted to become North America’s largest once complete. It will include a four-story building capable of accommodating 36,000 passenger movements per day, and enough berthing space to serve three latest generation ships at once. The $350 million project is expected to be completed towards the end of 2023.

Preparations for the new terminal have been underway since last July, when the Cruise Division of MSC Group and Fincantieri announced a collaboration under which Fincantieri Infrastructure would build the facility. It features a striking design by global architecture firm Arquitectonica.

The new terminal will accommodate the company’s largest and most environmentally advanced cruise ships, including MSC Cruises’ newest flagship, MSC Seashore, and the line’s future LNG-powered World Class ships. Most ships deployed there will be ready to plug in to the local power grid at berth, in line with PortMiami’s plans to enable shore power connectivity.

According to Rubén Rodriguez, president, MSC Cruises USA, the new terminal will help drive the line’s expansion in South Florida and beyond. It’s also part of the company’s larger sustainability goals, which include deploying our most modern and environmentally advanced ships to North America, the continued development of Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, and its pledge to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

Besides the terminal building, the new complex will include a multi-level parking space for 2,400 vehicles, new road construction to ensure smooth traffic flow, and three berths capable of accommodating the largest of cruise ships. While the company will construct two of those new docks, Miami-Dade County will build the third. The project also involves the construction of related shore infrastructure, including water supply stations and four passenger embarkation decks.
