Three Princess Ships to Skip Skagway Due to Rockslide Threat

Princess Cruises announced on Wednesday it is making a series of adjustments to itineraries for several of its ships making port calls to Skagway, AK given the decision by White Pass to close the forward berth at the Railroad Dock, the primary location where its Royal-class ships dock at that destination. On Tuesday, the line canceled its port call of Majestic Princess.

The dock, according to a Shannon & Wilson Geotechnical and Environmental Consultants report, was closed to due to a “recent isolated slope failure.” An engineer and rock slope expert were dispatched to assess the nearby slope’s stability and potential hazards. In its report, the consultants determined “that the slope conditions observed during our site visit display significant hazards to people and structures below the slope and mitigation of these hazards should be undertaken immediately to reduce the risk of injury and damage.”

As a result, the July 27 call of Royal Princess, the July 28 visit of Discovery Princess and the July 30 visit of Grand Princess will call on Sitka instead. Crown Princess, as Travel Agent previously reported, continued with its scheduled call in Skagway this week as that vessel docks at a different Skagway pier.

Princess will continue to work with officials from Skagway and the White Pass Rail Road to determine when scheduled calls can return. The line said in a statement, “The health and safety of our guests and crew are always our top priority and we appreciate and support [White Pass’s] decision [to close the dock]."
