This Week in Cruise: New in Cruise Ship Renos

It’s been a busy week for cruise ship renovations.

This week Crystal Serenity made its debut after an extensive refurbishment that mirrors a number of changes made to the Crystal Symphony in fall 2017. The luxury cruise ship now offers open-seating dining; new butler-serviced Seabreeze Penthouse and Seabreeze Penthouse Suite accommodations; redesigned lounge and entertainment venues; a new production show called Crystal on Broadway, The Show; and new interactive technological amenities.

Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Jewel also wrapped a renovation project this week. Part of the line’s Norwegian Edge fleet update program, the ship now has two new shows – “Rock You Tonight” and the ship exclusive “Velvet” – as well as two new dining venues, The Pit Stop and Bliss Ultra Lounge, replacing the Sky High Bar and FYZZ Cabaret Lounge. The ship’s staterooms, public spaces and recreation areas also received a refresh. It will now homeport in Sydney, Australia, starting December 1.

Looking ahead, Carnival Cruise Line released new details this week on its plan to renovate and rename the Carnival Victory as the Carnival Radiance. The cruise line announced that the Carnival Radiance will sail with the Big Chicken restaurant, the first sea-based location of a restaurant concept by NBA Hall of Famer and Carnival “Chief Fun Officer” Shaquille O’Neal. The new dining venue, situated aft on the ship’s Lido Deck, will serve a number of fried chicken specialties free of charge.

Finally, in expedition cruise news, this week Hurtigruten began a one-month drydock for its polar exploration vessel, the MS Richard With. The project will see upgrades for all of the ship’s staterooms and suites, including 14 additional suites created by merging a number of cabins. The gym will also be enlarged, and the ship’s dining venues will receive a number of new touches as well.
