Americans Granted Temporary North Korea Access

North Korea is temporarily allowing Americans to visit the country so they can attend the country's Mass Games in Pyongyang this spring. Although international travelers do visit North Korea, opportunities for Americans to do so have been extremely rare during the last half-century. Geographic Expeditions, a San Francisco-based tour company specializing in unusual and private journeys, has developed a guided itinerary departing April 22. North Korea had most recently given Americans a temporary window of time in which to apply for visas and journey to North Korea last fall for the Mass Games, but plans were canceled in the wake of significant flooding. Geographic Expeditions says it is the only major American tour operator with a North Korea itinerary this spring. It says North Korea has set a late March deadline for visa applications.
