Big Island Resort Offers Family Activities

Hilton Waikoloa VillageWaikoloa Beach Resort, a 1,350-acre destination resort located on the Kohala Coast of Hawaii’s Big Island, is offering numerous cultural activities for families this summer.

Some of the most popular activities include the Hilton Waikoloa Village and Queens’ MarketPlace daily hula, ukulele and other cultural lessons, Saturday Lava-Pool-Ooza at the Kona Pool featuring keiki kids games and disc jockey, summer Dolphin Quest shows and monthly Evening Under the Stars interactive Hawaiian storytelling events at Wai’ulua Bay at Hilton Waikoloa Village.*

For an in-depth look at the traditions and heritage that influenced the diverse culture of Hawaii, Waikoloa Beach Resort guests can explore the mile-long Museum Walkway at Hilton Waikoloa Village, which houses more than 1,800 pieces of authentic Asian, Western and Oceanic cultural masterpieces. For a glimpse into the past, when ancient Hawaiians traveled the Kohala Coast, guests can participate in a rigorous hike on the historic Kings’ Trail along the Waikoloa Beach Resort shoreline. The resort’s petroglyph trail also provides a glimpse into Hawaii’s storied past through engravings in the lava rocks.

For the water lovers in the family, Waikoloa Beach Resort has a partnership with Ocean Sports, letting guests snorkel, paddle board, paddle boat or kayak in Anaeho'omalu Bay or the four-acre private ocean-fed lagoon at Hilton Waikoloa Village. (Of course, guests can also lounge pool-side at one of three fresh-water swimming pools—including the Kona pool, one of the largest in the Hawaiian Islands, which has a waterfall, 175-foot waterslide, several Jacuzzis and a sand-bottom kid’s pool.)

Families can learn about dolphins at the Hilton Waikoloa Village Dolphin Quest educational center, where they can touch, feed, play, learn and swim with these impressive mammals without leaving resort property. Programs are available for all ages and range from a Wee Tots Experience, for children ages two to four, to Trainer for a Day. Costs vary based on the program and number of guests.

Waikoloa Family Golf Days will also kick-off its second season this summer. From June 1 – July 31, after 3:30 p.m. every day of the week, family members can play on the Waikoloa Kings’ Course, a 7,064-yard, par-72 track with 83 strategically placed sand traps, pot bunkers and links golf trappings. Fees for Waikoloa Family Golf Days include nine holes on the Kings’ Course, green fees, cart fee and complimentary top-of-the-line rental clubs for juniors. Adult clubs are available at an additional charge, and junior clubs are provided on a first-come first-served basis.

After a long day in the Hawaiian sun, families can experience a true Hawaiian tradition: the luau. One of the best on the island, the Legends of the Pacific luau features traditional dance and music from the Pacific Rim, accompanied by a traditional imu underground oven kalua pig presentation and children’s activity stations. The traditional luau buffet dinner includes a variety of fruits, salads, grilled specialties, fresh island fish, a lavish display of island-style desserts and a special children’s buffet. Tickets are available for Tuesday, Friday and Sunday shows.
