Club Med Buccaneer's Creek in Martinique to Reopen

Club Med Buccaneer's Creek in Martinique, located in Sainte-Anne on the island's south coast, will reopen this weekend following settlement of the work stoppage that closed the resort after January 25. All operations will be back to full capacity by early next week. The bone of contention was how the 35-hour French workweek is to be structured. Club Med was not involved in the labour negotiations; instead they were handled by Société Martiniquaise de Villages de Vacances, the company that manages the resort's operations. An insider source says that although the work stoppage hasn't been settled, cooler heads prevailed, enabling the resort to reopen. The same source says several U.S. flag chains are investigating the possibility of opening resorts on Martinique. At present, Club Med Buccaneer's Creek is the most popular resort for U.S. visitors. In 2005, U.S. visitors accounted for only a miniscule 0.6 percent of total visitors to the island, excluding cruise ships. Club Med is contacting all guests holding reservations to advise them of the reopening date and to confirm vacation dates. Buccaneer's Creek reopened a little more than a year ago after undergoing extensive renovations to the tune of $60 million. Call 800-ClubMed.
