Destination Report: Maya Ka’ an, Quintana Roo

Travelers looking for an eco-destination that provides sustainable travel with a mix of history, culture and nature, can consider the Maya Ka'an region in the state of Quintana Roo. Here, visitors can discover the historical and cultural legacy of the Mayan people and explore the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, a protected region with tropical forests, mangroves and marshes. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and also home to numerous bird species, like the multicolored Quetzal and the Toh bird.

This destination implements and develops community-based tourism and has been preserving the ecosystem and Mayan heritage for the last eight years. Maya Ka'an is located in the Mexican Caribbean within easy access from the Riviera Maya region and its cities, such as Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, allowing visitors to take a one-day tour to explore the region.

Any tour that involves community tourism translates into a valuable, meaningful contribution to support the local population living in the jungle, the countryside and the coast, since the economic benefits go directly to the Maya people.

Filled with tropical forests and mangroves, Maya Ka’an is a natural habitat for jaguars, pumas, ocelots, and tapirs. Coastal lagoons and bays are ideal for exploring by kayak, bird watching, dolphin and turtle watching, or for taking one of the cultural tours in the Mayan area, among others. The latter, in addition to being a real contact with the remnants of this ancestral culture, also offers the chance to hear from the voice of the last witnesses to the history of the Caste War, as well as the teaching of the weaving of henequen, the process of artisanal elaboration of chewing gum, traditional herbal medicine, and more.

Here, visitors can also experience a taste of traditional Mayan life by interacting with local artisans and visiting some less-trodden archeological sites like Muyil, home to the 56-foot-tall El Castillo pyramid, one of the tallest in the region.
