The Eiffel Tower reopens Tuesday, May 21 at 9:30 a.m. (local time), the tower reports in a statement on its official website. The south garden entrance will remain closed through May 24 due to ongoing work, so visitors should use the east garden entrance.

The Paris landmark had been evacuated and closed Monday afternoon after a man was spotted climbing up the structure. The lockdown, which included both the tower and the esplanade underneath it, began at approximately 2:15 p.m. local time.

Visitors who had reserved a ticket for a visit Monday afternoon were immediately informed by email and will receive an automatic refund, tower officials said in a statement on the monument’s official Twitter account.

Officials say that security personnel spotted the man climbing the building from the second floor, which is reachable by stairs and an elevator from the inside. In accordance with official security procedures, security personal immediately informed the police and fire department, and approximately 2,500 visitors were evacuated.

At 9:30 p.m. local time, members of the Paris fire brigade were able to reason with the man, who was taken into custody by the authorities, officials said.

Eiffel Tower officials say that this type of incident remains rare due to security measures in place to detect intruders, including video surveillance, X-ray scanners, security barriers, and approximately 100 security agents.
