Hawaii Legalizes Civil Unions

In a move that is sure to generate controversy, but could also make the state more appealing to a target audience, Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie signed into law yesterday a bill that will legalize civil unions for same-sex couples. Several states already recognize civil unions and same-sex marriages, and this move could help increase Hawaii's appeal as a destination for weddings and union ceremonies.

CNN is reporting that the law goes into effect on January 1. It extends the same rights and benefits to partners in a civil union that spouses in a marriage enjoy.
