Since its inception a few years ago, many have considered the resort area of Playa Mujeres to be a part of Cancun. The community, a mere 20 minutes north of Cancun and approximately 15 miles away from the Cancun International Airport, is flanked by the Mexican Caribbean to the east and a wetlands wildlife preserve to the west. With the opening of a new flagship resort property, however, Playa Mujeres may finally be getting its own identity.

La Amada Hotel, the destination’s biggest luxury product to date, opened its doors on February 6 and is ready to welcome your clients looking for five-star luxury in Mexico.

When we first saw La Amada Hotel about three months ago, the project didn’t seem to be close to completion. We toured the facilities at night in mid-November, some of us stepping through wet cement while others ducked to avoid hanging cables. We were forced to use our imagination to picture Jacuzzis and walk-in showers where nothing but cracked walls stood and exposed wires hung.

But nearly a week ago, La Amada made its due date and opened what just may be the most luxurious resort in the Cancun area. Your clients can have a little of everything here. The facilities provide top-notch amenities, and the location is close enough to Cancun’s party center for clients who want to let loose.

Best Rooms

The hotel portion of the overall project, which also includes private residences and a marina with more than 170 slips, is made up of 109 rooms, the best of which is the Owner’s Suite. This is a two-bedroom suite and there is a Jacuzzi right in front of the window of the master bedroom. The suite overlooks the ocean, so the views are amazing. Forty percent of the rooms, including the Owner’s Suite, have plunge pools. Coming in at a close second would be the hotel’s Oceanfront Penthouse Suite with Plunge Pool. Each of these feature a private terrace as well as a separate living room and a master bedroom.

We also saw one of the 14 Swim-Up Suites, which have a pool right outside the back door of the room. A Jacuzzi is also tucked away in the back of the room, facing the window and offering great views of the pool.

La Amada’s Junior Suites all feature private terraces, marble bathrooms, king or twin beds and views of the garden and pools. The Ocean View Junior Suites feature a private terrace, full-marble bathroom and master bedroom. But we’d recommend the Ocean View Terrace Suite with Plunge Pool, which feature a terrace with a plunge pool, a marble bathroom and a master bedroom.

Other accommodations for your clients include the Beachfront Casita Suite with Private Pool and the Two-Story Beachfront Casita Suite with Plunge Pool. The Casitas offer the best access to the beach and also include a private pool and private terrace.

The one drawback to La Amada is that the resort only has two restaurants, although a third will most likely open soon, with more to follow. For now, clients will have the option to dine at either Isla Grill Restaurant or Aroma Restaurant. Isla Grill Restaurant specializes in seafood and Mediterranean rice dishes, while Aroma focuses on enological cuisine—cooking with wine—and features a special spa menu and an extensive wine list.

The Lobby Bar offers coffee and tea and the Natura Bar mixes a variety of fresh, natural juices. The Swim-up Lounge has bar service in its beachfront pool or on the beach all day. The Lupita Lounge is a centrally located area overlooking the Inland Marina.

The Spa at La Amada has 17 treatment rooms, including four spa suites. The 35,000-square-foot facility offers a range of full-service wellness treatments, fitness equipment and spa facilities, and is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.

Not far from the world’s second-largest coral reef and one of the Mexican Caribbean’s most abundant fisheries, the resort’s inland marina has 176 slips and can accommodate yachts of up to 120 feet.
