Melbourne Announces Details of Upcoming Spring Racing Carnival

Melbourne is gearing up for its annual Spring Racing Carnival, with more than 50 days of premier horse racing from September 17 to November 20 peaking during the four-day Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Over the years some of the world’s most fashionable people have graced the lawns of Flemington including Princess Diana; Sarah O’Hare; Carson Kressley; Stephen Jones; Kate Bosworth; Stevie Nicks; Eva Longoria; Chloe Sevigny; Paris Hilton and Priscilla Presley.

The first day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival begins with the AAMI Victoria Derby Day on Saturday, October 29 and is said to be the day for racing purists.

The fashion stakes will be equally high with the commencement of Myer Fashions on the Field. Derby Day is the first opportunity for women to parade their new outfits of the season. Traditionally, black and white has been the prominent color scheme for women, while men often choose to wear a grey morning suit, top hat, peacock vest and pin-stripe pants. The official flower for the meeting is the cornflower.

The Emirates Melbourne Cup on November 1 is celebrated at Flemington Racecourse and is the centerpiece of the Melbourne Cup Carnival. More than 100,000 people flock to Flemington Racecourse to be part of the action.
