Planning a Trip to West Hollywood

Getting there: All major carriers fly into Los Angeles. Your clients also have several airports to choose from: Los Angeles International Airport (LAX, www.lawa.org/lax) is the fifth busiest passenger airport in the world. L.A./Ontario International Airport (ONT, www.lawa.org/ont) is a medium-hub, full-service airport in the Inland Empire, approximately 35 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. Bob Hope–Burbank Airport (BUR, www.burbankairport.com) is 15 miles from downtown. L.A./Palmdale Regional Airport (PMD, www.lawa.org/pmd) is located in the Antelope Valley, about 60 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles. Long Beach Airport (LGB, www.longbeach.gov/airport) is around 40 miles south of downtown L.A. Suite with fireplace at the Chamberlain West Hollywood

Lodging: West Hollywood hotels are within walking distance of restaurants, nightlife, galleries and chic boutiques.

The Mondrian (www.morganshotelgroup.com) is in the midst of a $35 million renovation of all of its guest rooms, slated for completion by February 1, 2008. The hotel will remain open, as will the celeb-studded SkyBar, the pool and the hotel's restaurant, Asia de Cuba. Best rooms to book are the Deluxe Studio Suites, Deluxe One-Bedroom Suites and the Balcony Suites, which have the best views of the pool and the city. Travel agent contacts are sales assistants Kiran Tolani (323-848-6071, [email protected]) and Michael Lichtman (323-848-6081, [email protected]). Katana serves Japanese cuisine in a hip environment

The Sunset Tower Hotel (www.sunsettowerhotel.com) is an Art Deco landmark that has hosted such silver screen icons as Marilyn Monroe, John Wayne and Clark Gable. The hotel has also served as a backdrop for the films Get Shorty, The Player and Ocean's Twelve. Guests have the choice of booking rooms with a variety of city views or views of the Hollywood Hills. The views get more dramatic the higher you go, culminating at the penthouse level, which features Penthouse Suites with wraparound terraces. Direct your questions to Ron Ortez in the sales department (323-848-6660, [email protected]).

The Sunset Marquis Hotel and Villas (www.sunsetmarquishotel.com) is undergoing a $20 million expansion and has entered the last phase of construction on 40 new villas. The stand-out villa is the two-bedroom, three-bath, two-story Presidential Villa, which measures 3,200 square feet and has three fireplaces, a patio and a screening room with a 100-inch TV. Included in the expansion are a new restaurant, new gym and spa facilities. Travel agents can contact Dennis Hofilena, director of sales and marketing (310-657-1333, ext. 5104, [email protected]). SkyBar at the Mondrian hotel

The Chamberlain West Hollywood (www.chamberlainwesthollywood.com) is on a quiet tree-shaded block and has the ambiance of a hip and elegant condominium instead of a city hotel. Each guest room is appointed with a gas-log fireplace and private balcony. One-Bedroom Suites have separate bedrooms and expansive living areas with queen-size convertible sofa beds; select One-Bedroom Suites additionally feature a dining nook and kitchenette. Best rooms to book are the ones facing Westmount Drive at the front of the hotel (mostly Grand rooms). They have more natural light, and some have skylights. Travel agents may contact the hotel's Central Reservations Office at 800-201-9637 or the sales department at 310-657-7400.

Dining: Katana (www.katanarobata.com, 323-650-8585) serves Japanese fare in a New Age venue that attracts a hip crowd. The restaurant specializes in authentic robatayaki cuisine (grilled food Japanese-style). Some popular robatayaki options are filet mignon wrapped around foie gras and asparagus; lobster with pink peppercorn miso glaze; and Kurobuta organic pork and pineapple with plum sauce. If your clients are looking for a romantic table, book them into the Sunset Room, which has views of the Sunset Strip.

BOA West Hollywood (www.boasteak.com, 310-899-4466) dishes up steaks and chops from a selection including prime Kentucky beef, certified organic beef and premium Japanese wagyu, all served with a choice of rubs and housemade sauces. If your client wants to see and be seen, book a table inside; for something more intimate, request a table on the patio overlooking the Grafton Hotel swimming pool.

Sushi Roku (www.sushiroku.com, 323-655-6767) is known for the boldness of its cuisine, combining traditional ingredients with surprising additions, such as jalapeños from Latin America and olive oil from Europe. For a tête-à-tête, book a table outside on the patio next to the waterfall and koi pond. To be where the action is, sit near the sushi bar. —MR
