Puerto Rico Looks to Accelerate Permits, Licenses Process for Destination Weddings

The Puerto Rico Tourism Company (PRTC) is making it even easier for clients to get hitched on the island.

PRTC recently opened a new Demographic Registry Office at its Old San Juan Tourist Information Center, which is a big deal considering the destination hosts roughly 70 destination weddings per month. With a convenient location near several top attractions, the new office will help PRTC accelerate permits and licenses proceedings for wedding organizers and couples who wish to wed on the island.

The new initiative’s positive impact will extend beyond tourist and benefit the local destination weddings market and the economy. According to data from the Puerto Rico Demographic Registry, in 2013 more than 800 destination weddings (with an average of 100 guests) took place on the island. This figure represents nearly 84,000 visitors with an average daily expense of $978, and an impact of nearly $82 million for the local economy.

Each wedding celebrated on the island generates about 24 direct jobs and 18 indirect jobs, including: waiters, bartenders, coordinators, decorations, photographers, furniture, transportation, officiate personnel, etc.

The Demographic Registry Office, located at the PRTC’s Information Center in Old San Juan, will be open to the public from Monday through Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
