Stats: Most- and Least-Desired Holiday Destinations in Europe

Barcelona is the most-desired European holiday getaway for U.S. travelers, according to a new study by airport transfers company Taxi2Airport.com. The company analyzed online searches for 100 of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe to compile the list. 

According to the report, the 10 most commonly searched holiday destinations are:

  1. Barcelona, Spain
  2. Paris, France
  3. Prague, Czech Republic
  4. Budapest, Hungary
  5. Vienna, Austria
  6. Berlin, Germany
  7. Dubrovnik, Croatia
  8. Madeira, Portugal
  9. Malaga, Spain

The company also analyzed the least commonly searched holiday destinations for travelers looking to escape the crowds. The 10 least searched destinations are:

  1. Louvain-La-Neuve, Belgium
  2. Montbeliard, France
  3. Valkenburg, the Netherlands
  4. Hasselt, Belgium
  5. Rudesheim, Germany
  6. Dordrecht, the Netherlands
  7. Worms, Germany
  8. Erfurt, Germany
  9. Brixen, Italy
  10. Braunschweig, Germany

Braunschweig, the 10th least-searched holiday destination this year, is famous for its sausages, asparagus and gingerbread, according to the report. Americans searched for this destination 22,000 times per month. Brixen and Erfurt, by contrast, were only searched 1,900 and 1,600 times per month, respectively. 

The study also found that 9,900 Americans per month searched the term “Christmas getaway,” while 1,300 per month searched “Thanksgiving getaway. 

In other news, the American Society of Travel Advisors is forecasting a bright outlook for the holiday travel season as part of its latest How America Travels study. The survey, which polled 2,050 U.S. adults, found that 47 percent of respondents plan to take a trip during the upcoming holiday season, rising to 74 percent of those who plan to use a travel advisor.
