Fall Art Exhibitions Paris 2009

Autumn in Paris always brings a plethora of cultural offerings, from the opening of the opera and dance season to the wine festival celebrating the annual grape harvest from the Montmartre vineyards to fashion week. The museums and galleries bring out the big guns in terms of blockbuster exhibitions and this fall season offers a rich variety for all tastes. Here are a few must see shows.

Louis Comfort Tiffany

Tiffany glass lovers will be in seventh heaven viewing the new show with works by Louis Comfort Tiffany. He was the son of the founder of Tiffany’s and was one of the most creative artists to ever to design glassware. The exhibit is the first ever in France and there is a collection of over 160 stained-glass windows, vases, lamps, objects, jewels and mosaics, drawings, watercolors and photographs. Divided into six sections, the show explores significant periods of Tiffany’s life from the 1800s till the early 1900s including his time working in Paris and Europe , working as an interior designer for wealthy American clients, stain glass creations, and lamps and decorative objects for which he became most famous for. Don’t miss this gem. Open until January 17.

Federico Fellini

Federico Fellini was the father of modern Italian cinema in the 1950s and 60s and his unforgettable films have become classics. Iconic images and stills from his films including La Dolce Vita, La Strada, 8 1/2, Juliet of the Spirits, Amacord, and Nights of Cabiria will be shown along with original film posters, period magazines, and film excerpts. A selection of photographs and drawings from the master himself Fellini will also be on display. Viva Italia! Open from October 20 till January 17.

The Dutch Golden Age: From Rembrandt to Vermeer

One of the most important periods in history of world art, the era of Dutch master painters is being gloriously celebrated with the new exhibit "The Dutch Golden Age." Besides the well known artists Rembrandt and Vermeer, lesser known painters such as Jan van Goyen, known for his landscapes, Willem Claesz Heda and Pieter Claesz, known for their still lifes, and Jan Steen and Adriaen van Ostade who satirized village life are represented. Over 130 pieces are on display with paintings, drawings and watercolors, etchings, and objects including carved ivories, tapestries, china, wooden miniatures, silverware, glassworks and furnishings. Open from October 7- February 7.

Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese – Rivals in Renaissance

Inspired by each other but also fierce rivals, Venetian artists Titian, Tintoretto, and Veronese produced some of the finest paintings of the 16th century. The Louvre proudly presents a breathtaking show of 85 works of these masters. It reveals the combined spirit, competition, and ultimately the incredible body of work that they created. Open until January 4.
