Dunton Hot Springs Unveils Refreshed Major Ross Cabin

Dunton Destinations has unveiled the refreshed Major Ross cabin accommodations at Dunton Hot Springs, the Relais & Chateaux resort in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains. Major Ross was redesigned by architecture and interior design firm Waldo Works, and sports  interiors rooted in the spirit of the Old West while paying homage to the region’s heritage and history.

The highlight of the renovation is the reorientation of the cabin layout, aligning it with the historic structure that was originally built in the late 1800s. As part of this endeavor, the old bathroom was converted into a mudroom, creating a more functional space. In its place, a larger bathroom was added to the back, offering direct outside access to the source hot spring pool through a new outdoor shower, ensuring a rejuvenating guest experience.

Waldo Works drew inspiration from denim upholstery, cowboy shirt-inspired leather detailing, and a faded red, white and blue color palette to capture the authentic Western vibe. The woven rope-inspired stitching crafted on focal items such as the rug and bedspread complement the antique lassos and rope decorating the cabin’s wall.

The bathroom has hand-dipped tile panels inspired by settlers’ quilt patterns sourced from the American Folk Museum collection archive. The bathtub showcases a unique design reminiscent of a barrel. The vanity is meant to remind guests of a robust saloon door and invite guests to step into a bygone era.
