Five Lisbon Heritage Hotels Join Historic Hotels Worldwide

Five hotels in Lisbon have been added to Historic Hotels Worldwide, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation (U.S.) for recognizing and celebrating historic hotels across the globe. These hotels include Heritage Avenida Liberdade, As Janelas Verdes, Hotel Britania Art Deco, Hotel Lisboa Plaza and Solar do Castelo. These properties are part of the Lisbon Heritage Hotels collection, which promotes the history and culture of Portugal’s capital city.

Historic Hotels Worldwide membership is exclusive to historically significant hotels and resorts housed in buildings at that are least 75 years old. Each inducted hotel is required to possess one or more of the following qualities: it served as the former home, or it is located on the grounds of the former home, of famous persons, or it is a significant location for an event in history; it is located in or within walking distance to a historic district, historically significant landmark, place of a historic event, or historic city center; it has been recognized by a local preservation organization or national trust; and it displays historic memorabilia, artwork, photography, or other examples of its historic significance.

Lisbon Heritage Hotels were created with the idea of promoting historic hotels that reflect Portugal’s and Lisbon’s heritage, historic traditions and culture. The Lisbon Heritage Hotels are installed in historic mansions and small historic buildings located throughout Lisbon’s historic center. The hotels’ location in Lisbon’s historic center facilitates immediate contact with the most genuine aspects of the city, ranging from its monuments to the local flavors.

As Janelas Verdes (Historic Hotels Worldwide and Lisbon Heritage Hotels)

The five hotels from Lisbon Heritage Hotels inducted into Historic Hotels Worldwide are all rich in history and architectural significance.

Hotel Britania Art Deco was built in 1944. The Art Deco-inspired boutique hotel was originally designed by Cassiano Branco and has hosted many influential guests, including Omar Sharif, Carmen Sevilla and Vinícius de Moraes.

Built in 1780, Heritage Avenida Liberdade was owned by the Ericeiras family. Designed with Pombaline architecture, this historic hotel is located along the Avenida de Liberdade.

As Janelas Verdes was built in 1700. The palace once hosted the Portuguese author Eҁa de Queiroz, who used it as partial inspiration for the Ramalhete that appears in his masterpiece, “Os Maias: Episódios da Vida Romântica.”

Hotel Lisboa Plaza is a midcentury modern boutique hotel that has been family owned and operated since its debut in 1954. Located along the Avenida de Liberdade, it is close to attractions such as the Parque Eduardo VII and the Praça do Marquês de Pombal.

Built in 1765, Solar do Castelo sits upon the site of the former kitchens that once served the Real Alcáçova de São Jorge. The Real Alcáçova de São Jorge itself were the royal apartments for a massive castle known as the Castelo de São Jorge.
