Hotel El Convento Completes $3.6 Million Renovation

Hotel El Convento, one of Old San Juan’s landmark hotels, has announced the completion of a $3.6 million design and architectural renovation to its 81 rooms. An ode to the Conquistador Age, this upgrade blends the property’s Old World charm and splendor with Puerto Rico’s fun, vibrant and modern energy to add a new element of elevated experiences to one of the Caribbean’s most accessible travel destinations.

The renovation project was led by Interior Designer Wanda Torress, who also oversaw the unveiling of Hotel El Convento’s nearby adults-only sister property Palacio Provincial. Hues of cream, gray and terracotta were implemented throughout to complement the hotel’s original motif, while materials like mahogany and tartufo wood were used to commission custom furniture sourced from Brazil. To ensure a homey, modern feel, Hotel El Convento’s rooms were modified to include warm, dimmable LED lighting for preferred ambiance, along with strategically placed convenience plugs.

Befitting its origins as a Carmelite convent more than 370 years ago, this luxury hotel serves as a restoration of Spanish Colonial architecture and design, with a heated plunge pool and jacuzzi, five meeting rooms for social and corporate events, Library that serves as an away-from-home office for business travelers, and three on-site dining outlets offering contemporary Puerto Rican cuisine. Additionally, El Convento Beach Club access, daily complimentary Manager’s Wine & Cheese Cocktail hour and a 24-hour coffee and tea station add to the overall experience.
