Sandals, Beaches Resorts to Open in Tobago

Sandals Resorts International (SRI) issued a statement Monday morning to Travel Agent and other media outlets announcing official plans to open both a Sandals Resort and a Beaches Resort on the island of Tobago.

“We look forward to being a part of the Tobago hotel community as it’s a place I have been interested in for 14 years,” said Gordon “Butch” Stewart, chairman of SRI. “It’s an incredible island with warm people and they have a lovely hotel community. We have been very comfortable dealing with the various officials on the island and look forward to what the future holds.”

Last year, representatives with SRI confirmed with Travel Agent that the all-inclusive giant was in negotiations to open its first hotel on Tobago.

At the time, a public relations representative for the company, "Sandals is in discussions with the government and looks forward to the prospect of bringing its brands to Tobago."

Also at the time, the Trinidad & Tobago Guardian reported that the Tobago House of Assembly held preliminary talks with Stewart about proposed construction of a 750-room hotel on the island. Travel Agent was unable to confirm either groundbreaking or opening dates.

This will mark the company’s latest Caribbean expansion since it first set up shop in Barbados back in 2015. The company also announced plans to expand to Mexico roughly two years ago, but has put those plans on hold to focus on ongoing Caribbean projects.
