The Sanderling Resort Unveils Transformation This Spring

The Sanderling Resort on North Carolina’s Outer Banks is set to unveil a redesign in spring 2025, marking the property’s 40th anniversary. The new iteration of the resort will reveal revamped interiors by Ward + Gray, a restaurant by Chef Vivian Howard, a venue to host gatherings and weddings, and experiences poised to establish the resort as a year-round destination.

Ward + Gray will transform the interiors of the resort’s 123 guestrooms and suites. Additional accommodation options include The Residences at The Sanderling, comprising six three-, four- and six-bedroom vacation homes. With expansive living rooms and full kitchens, wraparound decks, easy beach access, sunset views of the Currituck Sound and more, these multi-story houses combine the comforts of home with the luxuries of a full-service resort.

North Carolina native, author and chef Vivian Howard will introduce her latest culinary concept, Theodosia, at the resort this summer. Slated to open Memorial Day weekend, the restaurant will showcase Southern fare. The resort’s collection of restaurants and bars also includes the historic Lifesaving Station for breakfast, lunch and dinner; causal pool and beachside fare at The Sandbar; and Beach House Bar serving coffee and pastries in the morning, and cocktails and bites in the evening.

Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, sun-seekers will find ample ways to enjoy The Sanderling’s setting: kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, surfboards, boogie boards and skim boards, a zero-entry family pool and the adults-only tranquility pool, complimentary beach chairs and umbrellas, and classic games such as cornhole, bocce ball, and more.

Wellness facilities include a spa with 10 treatment rooms with views of the Currituck Sound, plus a menu of skincare, body, nail and haircare treatments. The fitness center offers specialized classes, including sunrise yoga on the beach and guided meditations.

The Sanderling’s new Sunset Ballroom is set to debut this spring. Located across from the main resort, this 8,500-square-foot waterfront venue will set the tone for social celebrations and group events on the Outer Banks. Other meeting and event spaces include the refreshed Lawn, an oceanside setting for outdoor weddings and celebrations; The Event House with an executive boardroom and expansive outdoor deck; The Observation Deck overlooking the beach and ocean; Keeper’s Loft with sunset views over the Currituck Sound; and quiet stretches of beach for on-the-sand events.

The Sanderling will also introduce a calendar of diverse experiences that establish the property as a year-round destination. Activities range from floral arranging workshops, cocktail classes, book clubs and stargazing, to ghost crab hunting, art exhibitions, beach picnics, holiday celebrations, and more.

To immerse themselves in the destination’s land, sea and air experience, guests can enjoy biking along scenic trails,  nature walks and off-roading with wild horses. For those seeking a new perspective, hang gliding and bi-plane tours offer views of the coastline.
