Who’s Where in Travel: Three Mexico Resorts Name New GMS

The newly renovated W Punta de Mita announced the appointment of Oscar Gonzalez Ibarra as general manager.

Gonzalez began his career in his hometown of Mexico City at the JW Marriott Hotel. Over the course of his 26-year career, he has held numerous leadership positions across a range of hotels and Marriott-branded properties, leading him to work in locales spanning from Panama and London to Aruba, Honduras and, most notably, Mexico. In 2019, he received the “General Manager of the Year” of Marriott’s Caribbean and Latin American (CALA) region. Just prior to joining W Punta de Mita, Gonzalez served as chief operating officer for a private real estate company, where he oversaw seven hotels under the Hilton and Hyatt umbrellas.

In his new role, Gonzalez will take the helm of the 126-room resort's operations. His role will be instrumental in highlighting the recent multimillion-dollar renovation.

Andaz Mayakoba additionally appointed César Moreno as its new general manager. In his new role, Moreno will manage every aspect of the resort, from larger-scale initiatives to day-to-day operations, including the 214 guestrooms and suites, Naum Wellness & Spa, four restaurants and events spaces.

César has held GM roles with the Hyatt brand for over 20 years, most recently at Hyatt Regency Andares Guadalajara, where he oversaw its successful launch in 2016. During his time there, Moreno successfully positioned the hotel as the market leader in region.

Moreno has held previously held positions of F&B Director at Hyatt Regency in Cancun and at the Marriott St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands. From here, he took on roles with the sales and marketing function of the properties, before several successful general manager roles.

Lastly, Hilton Los Cabos announced Raul Aguilera as the resort’s new general manager. An industry veteran with more than two decades of experience, Aguilera oversees all aspects of hotel operations, including guest services, staff management, revenue management and strategic planning. Aguilera joins Hilton Los Cabos from Hilton Tampa Downtown and Embassy Suites Downtown where he served as complex general manager.

Prior to joining Hilton Los Cabos and his former position in Tampa, Aguilera’s career includes general manager of Hilton Miami Airport, in addition to overseeing a $6 million property renovation for the Sheraton National Hotel in Arlington, VA. He has received several accolades throughout his career for leadership and service delivery, including Hilton’s 2014 “General Manager of the Year” Award during his time with Hilton Miami Airport and the “Excellence Award for Service” in 2017 with Hilton Grand Vacations SeaWorld.
