Holland America Cancels Third Veendam Cruise, Sends Ship to Boston Drydock

Propeller woes continue for Veendam, which is now headed to Boston for drydock repairs.

Holland America Line has cancelled a third consecutive cruise on Veendam, as a stubborn propellor problem that the line attempted to repair dockside in Quebec City has proven more difficult. Now the ship is en route under its own power -- and without any guests -- to a drydock in Boston for more extensive repairs.

"It has been determined that a complete repair can only be made in a dry-dock," the line said in a statement, which also expressed regret for the cancellation of the ship's seven-day Canada & New England sailing of Veendam from Quebec to Boston on Oct. 11. Previously, voyages were cancelled on Oct. 4 and Sept. 28.

Full Refunds for Guests

"We are profoundly sorry for the disappointment of our guests who have been impacted by these required repairs," the line said. Guests booked on the sailing will receive a full refund of their cruise fare plus a future cruise credit of 100 percent of their cruise fare paid.

"In addition, we will reimburse non-refundable expenses such as missed tours and excursions that were purchased through Holland America Line," the statement said.

Holland America Line is working with all guests scheduled to sail on this voyage and their travel agents to assist with necessary changes. Guests with questions may call 877-425-2231 or 206-626-7398.

As in previous statements, the line stressed that all services and safety systems on the ship are fully operational and that safety is its top priority.
