Hurtigruten has announced a big renovation project for 2016 that will see all four of its mid-1990s-built ships get new interiors and furnishings based on a modern Scandinavian design inspired by the fjords of Norway's west coast.
The Norwegian shipyard Fosen Yards has won the contract for the project.
The four ships will be rotated through the shipyard with work expected to take a little over three weeks for each of the four ships: the Polarlys (completed by February 2); Kong Harald (February 7); Nordkapp (April 19); and Nordnorge (November 18). The new Spitsbergen, undergoing a more major upgrade to fit in with the current fleet, will launch in the spring.
As part of the project all of the ship’s common areas, reception foyers, cafes and bistro areas and the aft deck will be renovated. The colors will be earthy and derived from the coast and the sea, while making use of many natural materials, such as wood, slate and leather.
In addition, Hurtigruten has partnered with dozens of local food suppliers to develop the Coastal Kitchen concept emphasizing seasonal ingredients, often harvested the same day. A range of fresh pastries from the ship’s bakeries will be offered and barbeque stands are being added to the outside decks. The bar will be moved to the panoramic lounge, offering better views to guests. The ship's fitness rooms will also get upgraded views.
